We are thrilled to unveil the highly anticipated 4th release of our Heart River Spirits Original Rum. Crafted with the same dedication and passion you’ve come to expect, this release represents yet another step forward in our journey to perfect the art of distilling.

The Origins of Heart River Spirits Original Rum

The story of Original Rum begins with a simple yet ambitious idea: to create a truly unique North Dakota-crafted spirit that pays homage to traditional whiskey culture while incorporating the rich history of rum. This vision was born in the early days of Big Dog Distillery when Scott Beierle set out to develop a rum that would be entirely unique to anything else.

Thus the idea to age our rum in various whiskey and bourbon barrels came to be. Now we are on our 4th edition, each release has been different compared to the bottles that came before, from the barrel origins to the time spent aging. Please join in our passion as we dive into this newest release!

Flavor Profile & Other Details

The 4th release of Original Rum continues our tradition of excellence. This batch has been aged in an Old Elk Straight Bourbon barrel imparting a smooth, rich flavor. The profile highlights notes of butterscotch and vanilla, and a touch of oak, with very low smoke and a gentle finish. It’s light, approachable, and perfect for sipping or mixing in your favorite cocktail.

Rum was added into the Old Elk barrel in March of 2022 and removed in Jan 2025, a total of 2 years and 10 months spent aging.

  • Available Bottles: Limited to just 50 bottles

How Does It Compare to the 3rd Release?

Fans of our 3rd release will notice some exciting differences in the 4th release. The 3rd batch was aged in a maple syrup barrel followed by wheated whiskey, creating a profile dominated by sweet maple and bourbon notes—so rich it could pass for a sweet bourbon. In contrast, the 4th release leans more into its rum heritage, offering a pronounced rum flavor accented with notes of butterscotch and oak. It has a smoother and lighter finish, making it distinct yet equally memorable.

Each release brings its own unique characteristics, and we’re confident that the 4th release will become a favorite in your collection.
